I think you have to know exactly how much needs to be withheld. In your friend’s case, I’m afraid he made a serious miscalculation:)

Giving someone an interest-free loan never works in your favor. However, if you’re doing everything else, I would just stick to what you’re comfortable with.

Good list! However, I slightly disagree with #17. When you get your annual, fatty tax return isn’t that a better alternative than not setting aside anything for taxes until they come due, and subsequently getting caught empty-handed?

A good friend of mine tried that several years ago & it did not work out like he planned. It took him nearly 3 years to pay the IRS what he owed in back-taxes, needless to say, he hasn’t tried that one again.
